Discover the World of Materials!

Explore Our Laboratories at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering

How do we find out how much a material can withstand? What can we discover using an electron microscope? How are advanced materials developed, and how do we investigate their properties?

Come and find out for yourself! We invite secondary school students and their teachers to join us for a guided tour of our research facilities.

We will open the doors to our specialized laboratories, introduce you to modern technologies and show you what science looks like in practice. You can look forward to fascinating experiments, practical demonstrations and the opportunity to meet experts who work in materials research every day.

What can you look forward to?

  • Mechanical Testing of Materials – Discover how we measure strength, hardness and toughness, and find out just how much materials can withstand.
  • Metallography – Take a closer look at the internal structure of materials and discover what lies beneath their surface.
  • Electron Microscopy – Explore materials in incredible detail, far beyond what the naked eye can see.
  • Heat Treatment – Find out how heating and cooling processes can change the properties of metals.
  • Advanced Technologies – Discover modern surface coating and treatment methods, unconventional welding techniques and the latest developments in additive manufacturing.

Science Up Close

Materials engineering combines physics, chemistry, engineering and modern technologies. The materials we develop and investigate are used in a wide range of fields, including the automotive and aerospace industries, energy, medicine and many other areas of everyday life.

During the tour, you will discover that materials engineering is about much more than theory and equations. It is a fascinating field full of experiments, discoveries and exciting engineering challenges.

Visit Us – or We Can Come to You!
