The materials aren’t boring! Sign up for courses 6MS-A or 5FM-A

List of Compulsory-optional subjects for the 3rd Year of study, winter semester, Programme: Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering

6MS-A – Limit States of Materials and Structures (4 kredity)

This course examines the properties of materials and their limit states, particularly from the perspective of mechanical loading, as well as microstructural response—that is, the circumstances under which and the causes leading to failure or damage to components or structures. The course presents both classical and modern approaches that help prevent such failures and is therefore essential for understanding the degradation processes that occur in materials during loading. Students will be introduced to the response of materials not only to mechanical loading but also to mechanical-thermal loading, including an introduction to the issues of failure analysis and life prediction.

5FM-A – Materials Physics (5 credits)

This course will help you understand why metallic and non-metallic materials behave the way they do. You will look inside materials down to the atomic and subatomic level and discover what happens during manufacturing, casting, heat treatment, mechanical loading, or corrosion. In addition to metals, we will also focus on ceramics and macromolecular materials. The course will give you a solid physical foundation for understanding modern engineering technologies.
